Our Mission

As Disciples of Christ of First Christian Church of Whittier, California we are committed to sharing the teachings of Jesus Christ with our neighbors everywhere through acts of love and caring. Our calling is to learn, grow, teach, and serve in a constantly changing world.

Our Beliefs

Like most Christians, we believe that Jesus Christ is the son of the Living God and proclaim him Lord of our lives and Savior of the world. Unlike most denominations, we neither demand nor expect a unified understanding or agreement of the “how” or “why” specifics behind this belief, but are called to share with one another the scriptural and other basis of our own particular belief. We believe that no other lesser beliefs should stand in the way of our sharing communion and community around our central belief in Christ.

Our practices

Open Communion The Lord’s Supper, or Communion, is celebrated in weekly worship. It is open to all who wish to partake. Baptism by Immersion In baptism the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new life of trust in God is made possible. Although we generally practice baptism by immersion, we honor other baptism traditions as well. New members are accepted through a profession of faith and baptism, by affirmation of faith (I have been baptized, but I don’t belong to a church), or by transfer of membership from another church (I am a member of another Christian congregation).
